Athletics

At Knysna Primary School, athletics is a diverse sport that offers a large variety of learners the opportunity to perform in high jump, long jump, shot put, discus, javelin, hurdles, sprints and long distance. On top of the sport, we also offer the learners the opportunity to become part of the spirit from the spectator's point of view. The pavilions buzz with spirit when the interhouse colours compete.

Knysna Primary School has skilled and passionate coaches who coach athletes to reach their full potential. We annually boast athletes who are included in the Eden team and have been undefeated for 10 consecutive years at the annual Kareedouw athletics event.

Here, each athlete is not just a number, but an individual.

Swimming

We offer swimming as an extracurricular activity in the first and fourth term at Knysna Primary School. It is presented as an individual sport. Swimming trials are held at the beginning of each year to select a team that forms part of the school's swimming team. These swimmers swim competitively for the school in different galas.

We started our own Learn2Swim program in 2023 and five qualified coaches teach our feeder school Knysna Pre-Primary’s learners to be water safe and then offer the transition to swimming lessons. They are then prepared for the day that they start with Grade 1.

We also offer intermediate group swimming, twice a week. These lessons are for learners who qualified for the swimming team or are not interested in swimming competitively. All our coaches are well-qualified and have many years' of experience in the sport.

Rugby

Rugby at Knysna Primary brings players and spectators pride, passion and excitement. The sport teaches the players skills, values and camaraderie to be holistically developed.

Players learn about commitment, diversity, responsibility and respect. Rugby is truly a sport enjoyed by all.

Netball

At Knysna Primary School we believe that we want to offer every girl the best possible opportunity to participate in sport, in this case, netball.

The school has several teams that play matches every season. In cases where there are no opponents for the lower teams in the league, friendly matches are arranged.

The school has four netball courts. There is practice every Monday and Wednesday. Knysna Primary strives to have the best possible coaches for each age group.
Coaches at Knysna Primary School also regularly get the opportunity to improve their knowledge by attending clinics and courses.

We live out our passion on the netball court and believe that in this way we can also make a difference in learners' lives.

Cricket

Knysna Primary takes great pride in playing the game of cricket. The ethos of the game correlates well with what we as a school stand for.

Respect, integrity, pride and passion are the values we showcase by playing the game of cricket. It is a sport that is greatly enjoyed by all players, staff and parents. The onus will always be on inclusivity and having fun. Hope to see on the pitch.

Tennis

Knysna Primary School has 5 beautiful tennis courts where the learners develop a love for the sport.

Many of KPS’s tennis players are annually inducted into the Eden team. Ivan Strydom from the IGTA Tennis Academy is the full-time private coach and is also actively involved with the school’s tennis team.

With enthusiastic coaches, this sport continues to grow every year. Come and discover your passion for tennis.

Hockey

Hockey is a favoured winter sport amongst KPS learners from Grades 1 to 7. With our mini-Astro and access to a full-size Astro, practices are filled with learning and fun. Term 3 is action-packed with all age groups taking part in tournaments around the Garden Route.

We host some of our own tournaments as well: u/7 to u/11 festival and u/13 weekend including a 6-aside night tournament and round-robin day festival. These tournaments attract schools from various provinces in SA. A major highlight is our u/13 tour. This tournament has previously taken us to Cape Town and Gqeberha.

Cycling

Cycling at KPS is a thriving sport. Our cycling team is adventurous and participates in many different events throughout the year.

They participate in road cycling and mountain biking. We have celebrated many prestige achievements with our cyclists. KPS has celebrated SA championship victories as well as a wonderful second place in the Southern Cape School Cycling League in 2022.

The Garden Route offers beautiful cycling routes, which makes cycling at KPS a real treasure.

Chess

Both juniors and seniors participate in various tournaments within the Garden Route competing against other schools. Despite the long days, we encourage our players to give their absolute best effort. With chess they learn determination, interest and dedication.

It is a wonderful cultural activity for all age groups and is well correlated with maths as decision-making is crucial. We encourage learners to become part of our chess team and challenge themselves to learn and grow with their fellow participants.

We aim to make chess masters out of patzers.

*Patzers: a poor chess player.

Golf

We introduce golf at a very young age. Our Gr 1 - 3 learners take part in the Snag golf program. Which is a lot of fun and a great way to them interested in golf. We have some exciting young golfers at Knysna Primary School that takes part in the Scratch golf school’s league. The onus will always be on fun, enjoyment, building friendships and making memories.

Biathlon

Biathlon consists of 2 divisions: running and swimming. The athletes' times are used to calculate their points. Biathlon takes place in the 1st and 4th term and learners are privileged to visit a different part of the beautiful Eden district on each occasion.

The age group in which the athlete participates is determined annually according to the athlete's age on 1 September. We encourage learners to seize this opportunity to develop and master more than one talent.
