DANCE
Marike Hendriksz
Marike Hendriksz trained in the Cecchetti method as young dancer under Patricia Miller and in the RAD method under Mignon Furman. She has a “Ballet Teacher’s Diploma Course” from UCT where she received her classical training under Dulcie Howes, David Poole and Dudley Tomlinson. She passed her three year Diploma Course with Distinction, passed the RAD Advance Performers exam and the Cecchetti Advanced Teacher’s exam with Honours.

Marike travelled to Europe, attended numerous dance schools, performed in Lucerne and danced leading roles in the University Dance Performances at the Little Theatre in Cape Town.

In 1974 Marike joined the then CAPAB Ballet Company and started her own Ballet School in Stellenbosch during 1976, where she has been teaching ever since. Several of Marike’s pupils, Desiree Samaai, Mariette Lindenberg, Sandri van Wyk, Cecile van Noort, Gina Castignani, and Ami Philp won the Kate Ready bursary, awarded to the most promising dancer during the RAD Vocational examination session in the Cape.

During her teaching career she attended many Summer Schools all over Europe, as well as in New York and St Petersburg in Russia and has taught at Summer School locally and abroad including the Summer School of Excellence at Purchase College in America. She’s also been appointed as the external examiner at the UCT School of Dance and co-adjudicator for the Solo Seal Awards in Johannesburg. During 2002 she was the Chairlady of the RAD Western Cape Regional Panel and is an appointed mentor for the RAD teacher’s certificate. Marike is the Ballet Consultant to the Theatre Dance Association and is a TDA Ballet Examiner. After 35 years in this arena, Marike is excited to face new challenges as she shares her knowledge and expertise with teachers and their pupils.
VISUAL ART
Helena Bruwer
Dr Helena D. Bruwer obtained her professional qualifications in education by studying first full-time and later part-time under various education institutions in South Africa and Canada. She qualifies as art teacher at the Mowbray College of Education.

In 1987 she obtains her M Ed degree and in 1990 her D Ed in Comparative Education and Teaching Management at the University of Potchefstroom. During her career she educated learners in various schools in South Africa, England and Canada. At her retirement she was lecturer in the Theory of Teaching at the Algoa College of Education.

Dr Bruwer takes interest in all aspects of life, but the fine arts is part of her very being. She was, amongst others, art teacher at Knysna Primary for 15 years. Her pupils regularly took part in the Sanlam art competitions. As art teacher she was a motivator and direction indicator of note. Consequently her own work as painter had to take the back bench for a while. Nevertheless she attended several schools and workshops in the art of painting. Amongst her instructors were Paddy Starling, Sheila Creasy (England) and Dale Elliot. Since her retirement she has again taken up the brushes and palette and under the proficient guidance of Liz Stumke she has developed her own style as painter.

Her first exhibition of mostly still-life paintings and portraits was on display at the Old Gaol Art Gallery in 2010. In October 2011 another exhibition of her landscape paintings will be displayed there.
SPEECH & DRAMA
Sjane van Aswegen
Sjane van Aswegen completed her Drama studies at Stellenbosch University. For many years she was associated with the two Girls’ schools in Paarl. She participated regularly in radio dramas before she became farmer’s wife in the Carnarvon district. Currently she lives at Brenton-on-Sea where she enjoys painting and writing.

Beatrix Erasmus
Beatrix Erasmus completed her school career at Piet Potgieter High School, Potgietersrus (Mokopane). Since Primary School age she took part in the Bosveld Eisteddfod and then already knew that drama would one day be her career. Her great dream was to be on television one day.

Beatrix obtained her BA Drama degree at the University of Pretoria. In the first year after completing her studies, she landed a role in the famous KykNet soap opera, Villa Rosa. She portrayed one of the main roles on set and also met her future husband there. They got married, left Villa Rosa and moved to Knysna.

Beatrix obtained her postgraduate Certificate of Education and currently teaches drama at Oakhill School, where she also instructs learners for Eisteddfods.
MUSIC - Conventional, Popular & Contemporary
Margie Spaumer
Margie Spaumer obtained a BA(Mus)(Hons) and H.E.D. at Pretoria University, a B.Ed at Unisa, as well as the Music Licentiates UTLM (Unisa); LTCL (Trinity College) and LRSM (Royal Schools). She studied piano with Phillip Levy and later Joseph Stanford. She toured Europe as accompanist of the University of Pretoria Choir as well as the Pretoria Children’s Choir (twice), also attending choir-conducting courses with Kurt Thomas, Iscal Aribo and Marinus Voorberg.

She founded the N.K.P. Girls’ Choir and conducted this choir for five years. This choir later became the Jacaranda Children’s Choir. She taught music at Wonderboom High School and was also Senior Lecturer at the Pretoria Teachers’ Training College for many years.

She was conductor of the S.A. Police Male Voice Choir (Pretoria) from 1986 to 1992. They won first prize at the Roodepoort International Eisteddfod, undertook two European tours and participated twice in the Montreux International Choir Festival. She was also conductor of the Middelburg Chamber Choir from 1993 to 1998.

She was head of the Music Centre at Middelburg High School, the provincial examiner for Practical Music in Mpumalanga, and the accompanist for the Mpumalanga Youth Choir, with whom she toured through Europe in 1999, where they won a gold medal in the International Youth Competition in Prague. She also accompanied the Mhluzi Choral Society and assisted them in rehearsals. From 2001 to 2007 she was the conductor of the Pretoria Male Choir, who produced three CD’s during this period.

Margie travels all over the country as adjudicator of choir festivals and eisteddfodau. She adjudicates the annual AKTV – Applous Choir Competition as well as the Tirisano Choir Competition, for whom she has conducted several workshops

As she has a wide knowledge of different choir mediums, she lectures extensively at choir workshops and courses, and has also been an external examiner for choir conducting courses at the University of Pretoria, where she also acts as lecturer.

Marie Skeen
Marie Skeen obtained a BA(Mus) and HOD (post graduate) at University of Potchefstroom, after which she achieved BMus(Hons) (in Piano didactics and composition) and MMus (in Music Education) at the University of Pretoria.

Previously she was associated with Gimnasium High School, Wolmaransstad, Ferdinand Postma High School, Nylstroom and Ermelo High School. She was also Senior Music Lecturer at the Pretoria College of Education and University of Pretoria (Faculty of Education) after amalgamation.

Marie acts as primary adjudicator at the annual Spektrum Revue Competition of the Gauteng Province and frequently manages the adjudication of Eisteddfodau, specifically covering revue and instrumental categories. She regularly functions as accompanist for vocal and instrumental soloists and ensembles. She is also a production-advisor, director, music arranger, conductor, choreographer and presenter of workshops and short courses for music teachers.

She runs her own music academy, offering instruction in piano, guitar, woodwind and brass instruments. She is also presently the organist for the NG Kerk, Plettenberg Bay.

Daniel Hutchinson
Daniel Hutchinson is a composer, keyboard player, writer and teacher. His first publicly performed work was a setting of Antjie Krog’s short poem Rut for mixed vocal and instrumental ensemble commissioned by the Human Rights Commission and performed as part of the "Rollback Xenophobia Campaign" on October 21st 1999. Notable subsequent composition/performance projects include Rhythm Colour for choreographer Gregory Maqoma (2002), Copernicus for the POW Ensemble featuring Sazi Dlamini (2010) and incidental music for the devised theatre piece Schmooze directed by Ford Evanson (2011).

Daniel moved to the Eastern Cape from his home town of Johannesburg in 2002 and founded the Kouga Jazz Ensemble together with long time collaborator Xolani Faku in 2005, also gaining experience directing marimba bands, steel pans and school orchestras, particularly at St. Andrew’s Prep and DSG in Grahamstown from 2007 onwards. In 2008 he obtained his BMus through UNISA and in 2011 his UTLM (piano). He is currently serving on the board of NewMusicSA (www.newmusicsa.org.za)and is associated with the Keiskamma Trust as an arranger for the Keiskamma Music Academy (www.keiskamma.org/music). He is married to Blessing and has two daughters, Ushim aged 4½ and Gilia aged 2.
